1. Meditation
Meditation can be very calming and help to start your day off or re-start your day. Allowing yourself 10 minutes to close your eyes and focus on your breathing, tuning in to how your body is feeling, and tuning out the surrounding chaos. The saying “practice makes perfect,” applies here. The first few times you meditate, it’s going to be messy. You’re going to find your mind wandering into thoughts of what you need to do today, or that awkward thing you said last week, that you just can’t seem to let go of, that’s okay! Overtime, you’ll learn to recognize when your mind drifts off and how to gently pull it back in. I’ve been meditating to Boho Beautiful Yoga The14 Day Meditation Journey on Youtube and I absolutely love it! I have even cried and let out so many emotions I didn’t realize I was hanging on to! I encourage you to give it a try. Remember, this is your meditation, go at your own pace.
2. Move Your Body
This is a good one! I cannot count how many times I have felt outraged before a workout, to come out feeling free and at ease. Exercise has been proven to increase levels of serotonin and dopamine, it’s no wonder it helps us with our mental health! Not only does exercise help get you out of that funk, but it can also get your body back in shape. Which is a huge confidence boost! Start small, whether it be a stretching exercise or a 10-minute workout and escalate from there. Remember, doing something is better than nothing! Pamela Reif’s workouts on Youtube are amazing! I had some excruciating neck and back pain from a car accident years ago, so doing intense workouts became null. I found Pamela’s stretching workouts to be extremely helpful and relaxing, and because I’ve been pushing myself to get better, I’ve just recently started a low intensity workout to build back strength.
3. Sleep
Sleep is important for multiple reasons because it can affect your body and your mood. When your body doesn’t get enough sleep night after night, it can bring out many emotions including, crankiness, sadness, anger, being overwhelmed, just to name a few. We eventually take these emotions we are feeling out on people surrounding us. Even if we don’t mean to.
Start making a nightly routine, whether that be a bedtime meditation, yoga, nighttime skincare routine, or a cup of hot tea. Do something that relaxes you, and don’t forget to set an appropriate bed time to catch your beauty rest!
4. Food
Do you eat junk food? Do you eat whatever you want when you want? The saying, “You are what you eat,” is a very true statement. What you put into your body affects your gut health and can mess with your mood. Have you ever heard of the brain-gut connection? If you haven’t, check out this post to learn more about it. Food can be nurturing, energizing and help keep us healthy, or it can make us sluggish, weak immune system and of course, cause weight gain. Keep in mind that everyone’s body is different, so just because your best friend is keto, doesn’t exactly mean you should be keto as well. I have been following a PCOS diet by Kym Campbell and it has helped me gain so much of my energy back. I don’t feel sluggish and weighed down. It’s amazing when we nurture and love our body, that we can feel on top of the world!
5. Organize
Time to declutter! I know when my house isn’t clean, I have found myself feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and sad. Give it a try, declutter one room at a time (if you don’t already have a cleaning routine). Afterwards, start to pay attention to your feelings. Are you more relaxed? Keep decluttering, and overtime you’ll notice the negative feelings falling away. Organization is also a great way to clear the mind, so that you may think more clearly. If you’re not sure where to start, I have made a free cleaning routine that may be the thing you needed!
6. Hobby
Finding something to do on your off days is a great way to increase happiness and get out of a funk. Whether it be reading, writing, painting, you name it! The options are endless for finding a hobby. Not only can a hobby help get you out of that funk, but it also gives you something to do besides scroll on your phone or watch TV. In the beginning, the thought of doing something could be overwhelming, but give yourself some time, you’ll find you actually are enjoying your new hobby!
7. Nature Walk
Whether it’s going for a walk in the neighborhood, or taking a hike, there is something about nature that heals our soul. Being outside, breathing in the fresh air, the warmth of the sun on your face. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in and let nature take your pain away on the exhale. I know it’s not always possible to be outside due to weather, but a change of scenery is good on your soul and mind.
8. Letting Go of Perfectionism
Leave yourself room for mistakes. It’s okay to make them! We all make mistakes, it’s when we don’t learn from them, it becomes the problem. When we force ourselves constantly to have everything right all the time, it causes a buildup of stress, anxiety, fear and shame. We waste so much time and energy to be perfect, that we don’t enjoy the present moment. Imperfections can be beautiful!
