Decorating your home is more than just ‘keeping up with the joneses.’ It's about coming home to a safe place where you can just let it all go. From troubles at work to just needing to take a breather from life’s mishaps, your home should be your feel-good place. Read on for tips about using colors and textures to create a home you love!

1. Color Psychology

Color therapy plays an important part in giving you that relaxing feeling. Have you ever noticed that when you walk into certain places, you get anxiety or discomfort? Or maybe you walk in somewhere and feel welcomed and calm? All of these feelings have to do with color! Find the color that best suits your lifestyle. For me, I instantly knew it was different shades of blue. Blue is known for creating feelings of tranquility. Next, I knew I wanted hints of green because anything tropical always gives me feelings of being on vacation. Green is known for its healing and wellness. Put these two colors together and you're already on your way to creating that relaxing home you've dreamt of! Below is a list of basic color psychology.

2. Add Texture

Bringing texture to your home can give it that cozy or fun vibe! If you choose to go with faux fur, that says cozy and chic. Whereas you decide to go with velvet, which brings elegance to the room. In my home, I have used hints of woven seagrass or water hyacinth, to bring that coastal-natural vibe promoting that feeling of relaxation. We also have an oversized linen couch. Another way to add texture to your home could be flooring! Yes, I know! Flooring is a bit more pricey fix in making your home feel relaxing, but I wanted to open your mind to OPTIONS! The options are endless when it comes to texture. The floors we have are vinyl plank flooring with this wavy texture on it. Almost like mimicking the waves of the ocean. You may not realize it at first, but this too plays a hand in creating the entire ambiance.

3. Clutter

Ugh! Clutter! I don't know one person that enjoys clutter. Seriously, who walks into a home or a business, sees clutter, and instantly feels relaxed? Not me! So, to create that relaxing feel, we need to clear the clutter. Start with one room at a time or one thing at a time. For example, do it all at once if you need to dust. Feeling overwhelmed with clutter and cleaning will only lead to sitting on the couch and not doing anything. Remember, YOU CAN DO THIS! And if you have people in your home that contribute to the clutter, sit them down, have a conversation, and ask for help. This here though has more to do with Boundaries, which is a whole other post!

Remember, it’s your safe place, so design it how you want it!

From choosing a color palette to adding texture, you can style your home any way you want. Start by budgeting for one big item every so often (it depends on your monthly income) or several small items, and go from there. Just remember, have fun while decorating your safe place!
